The last fleet action between battleships starts in 1916 in the Battle of Jutland. After which, Germany pursues unrestricted submarine warfare.

1911 As the hull of the Titanic is launched a worker declares that not even God could sink the ship.

May 30: Rise of the Goddess of Democracy

On this day in history...

Joan of Arc is burned at the stake in 1431.
Mariner 9 launches in 1971 and will become the first atificial satellite of another planet.
In 1911 the first Indianapolis 500 race is run.


Also On This Day...

a statue depicting the Goddess of Democracy is raised in Tiananmen Square as part of prodemocracy protests in China. Crowds up until then around 9 or 10 thousand swell in the following days to number over a quarter million.

Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring premiers in Paris in 1913, a performance so disturbing later reports invent stories of riots at its opening.
Veterans the great war gather in Washington in 1932 for the Bonus March .
Tenzing Norway and Edmund Hillary reach the summit of Everest in 1953.


Also On This Day...

The British Colonet Tarleton wins a decisive victory over the last significant revolutionary force in Carolina in 1780. The victory was complete but at the end Tarleton and his men shot at those surrendering. This undermined the value of the victory as colonists fearing similar justice from their loyalist neighbors rallied and all of Carolina plunged into a deeper civil war.

May 28: Starting The First World War

On this day in history...

the Spanish Armada sails in 1588, determined to conquer England. Alan Turing submits "On Computable Numbers" in 1936. In 1987 Matthias Rust ends a 400 mile trip landing his Cessna in Red Square.


Also On This Day...

Colonel George Washington in 1754 leads as a British officer and annihilates a French and Indian force in what would later be called Jumonville Glen. The French officer Jumonville is killed but one of the French escapes and alerts a larger French force. The following defeat of Washington's force at Fort Necessity leads to Washington signing an admission which in turn leads to a wider war in Europe; The Seven Years War.

May 27: Chicago Worlds Fair

On this day in history...

the Battle of Tsushima Strait in 1905 consolidates Japan's ascendancy over Imperial Russia. After producing 15 million Model T cars the production ends in 1927 to be replaced by the Model A. The German battleship Bismarck is sunk in 1941.

Chicago World's Fair opens in 1933. It is so successful that it is reopened the following year.

On this day in history...

General Edmund Kirby Smith surrenders the last Confederate Army in 1865. The first commercial oil strike occurs in 1908 in what is today Iran. In 1868 the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson ends without a conviction.

May 25: Henry Acquires Exploration Funds

On this day in history...

The United States Constitutional Convention starts in 1787. In 1861 Lincoln suspends the right of Habeas Corpus for the duration of Civil War. The first Star Wars movie opens in theaters in 1977 and stays in theaters for almost a year.

Prince Henry of Portugal or as he would later be call Henry the Seafarer or Henry the Navigator, is appointed govenor of the Order of Christ in 1420. This position provides an important means of financing explorations. Organizing expeditions that explored the western coasts of Africa and passing the Cape Bojador, Henry was able to open alternatives to the land based trade routes through the Sahara.

May 24: 100 Billion for New York

On this day in history...

English Parliament in 1689 passes the Act of Toleration, Catholics and Dissenters are not included. In 1844 Morse sends and receives the message "What hath God wrought" while demonstrating the telegraph. The Brooklyn Bridge opens in 1883.

legend has it that in 1626 Peter Minuit bought Manhattan for $24. Some tales hold that the traded goods may have represented a "high technology transfer". Some contend that a local tribe made the deal but others contend that a tribe that was passing by made the deal.

But taking the amount at face value and allowing for six percent interest the purchase would have accumulated to over $100 billion today.

Joan of Arc is captured in 1430. The second Defenestration of Prague 1618 starts the 30 years war. Bonnie and Clyde are killed in 1934. The Good Friday Agreements of 1998 bring peace to Ireland.

the scribe Phillip Fabricius lands in a pile of manure. Philip along with the two govenors who were thrown out the window (Defenestration ) survive the fall. Later Phillip is ennobled with the title 'von Hohenfall', or 'of the High Fall'.

May 22: A Nation Migrates West

On this day in history...

Charles Darwin departs Plymouth Sound aboard the HMS Beagle in 1826. The Wright Brothers receive a patent in 1906 for their flying machine. And Microsoft releases Windows 3.0 in 1990 which sells over 100 thousand copies in two or three weeks.

Also On This Day...

over three thousand perhaps as much as five thousand oxen, cattle and other livestock are headed west by the over one thousand pioneers. Bound for Oregon in 1843, they consider themselves a nation on the move.

Following the success of two smaller wagon trains in the previous two years they have been gathering in Independence Missouri.In the preceeding couple of days flyers have been posted in the encampments and yesterday a meeting was held. A captain and a council of nine to advise and assist the captain are elected.

On the trail, a law passed to prevent individual groups of livestock is found to be unworkable. The law is repealed. There are several individuals with large herds, hundreds of head of livestock, which becomes a source of contention. Those with just a few, resent being compelled to guard the larger heards. The council of nine brokers and guarantees a deal whereby the owners of the great herds provide milk cows and beef should the buffalo fail, at fixed prices in exchange for cooperation in guarding the herds.

May 21: Chuck Berry Rocks With Maybellene

On this day in history...
Lawrence Kansas burns and Slavery Abolition pressses are destroyed during raids in 1856. Clara Barton renowned for provided comfort to the wounded of the following Civil War establishes the American Red Cross in 1881. Charles Lindbergh lands in 1927 and Amelia Earhart in 1932 after solo transatlantic flights. Germany sinks the United States ship SS Robin Moor in 1941 which fails start formal hostilities.

Also On This Day...
Chuck Berry records Maybellene in 1955. The record sells a million copies. This was followed by several hit records during the fifties. Chuck Berry toured during 1957 with other rock pioneers Buddy Holly and Everly Brothers.

May 20: Tornado Hits Town For Third Consecutive Year

On this day in history,

hundreds of Bishops convene in the First Council of Nicaea to reach consensus on tenants of Christian Faith in 325. Vasco de Gama arrives in India in 1498. Charles Lindbergh takes off in 1927 and Amelia Earhart takes off in 1932. They are attempting solo transatlantic flights.

Also On This Day,

the town of Codell Kansas is hit by tornado in 1916 on the east side of town. On this day in 1917 a tornado passed thru on the west side of town. Then once again on this day in 1918 a tornado passed into Codell from the south.

It occurred at 10pm just two hours after an news article was released noting it was "Cyclone Day" and all was quiet.
