July 4: First Train Ride

On this day in history...

United States declare independence in 1776, fifty years later John Adams and Thomas Jefferson the second and third presidents die on the exact same day.
In 1777, George Rogers Clark captures fort as Kaskaskia, opening the Northwestern Campaign of the Revolutionary War, which results in the doubling of the lands of the United States.
The Pathfinder mission lands on Mars in 1997.


Also On This Day...

Grand Junction Railway opens in 1837. The railway ran 82 miles and is considered the first long distance railroad. It also saw the first sorting and delivery of mail on a railway.
