May 22: A Nation Migrates West

On this day in history...

Charles Darwin departs Plymouth Sound aboard the HMS Beagle in 1826. The Wright Brothers receive a patent in 1906 for their flying machine. And Microsoft releases Windows 3.0 in 1990 which sells over 100 thousand copies in two or three weeks.

Also On This Day...

over three thousand perhaps as much as five thousand oxen, cattle and other livestock are headed west by the over one thousand pioneers. Bound for Oregon in 1843, they consider themselves a nation on the move.

Following the success of two smaller wagon trains in the previous two years they have been gathering in Independence Missouri. In the preceeding couple of days flyers have been posted in the encampments and yesterday a meeting was held. A captain and a council of nine to advise and assist the captain are elected.

On the trail, a law passed to prevent individual groups of livestock is found to be unworkable. The law is repealed. There are several individuals with large herds, hundreds of head of livestock, which becomes a source of contention. Those with just a few, resent being compelled to guard the larger heards. The council of nine brokers and guarantees a deal whereby the owners of the great herds provide milk cows and beef should the buffalo fail, at fixed prices in exchange for cooperation in guarding the herds.
