June 7: Gandi Kicked Off The Train

On this day in history...

Spain and Portugal divide the new world between themselves in 1494.
The Battle of Messines Ridge commences in 1917 with several tunnels filled with explosive are detonated.
The Yorktown is sunk in the Battle of Midway in 1942, the only US carrier loss compared to 4 carriers lost to Imperial Japan.

And Also On This Day...

Gandi refuses to obey a segregation law in 1893. Gandi was working as a lawyer in South Africa and while taking a train he refused to leave a first class rail car. He was kicked off the train, the first act of civil disobedience on his part.
